Black Men And Natural Hair

I got the inspiration for this blog post from YouTuber Sava Mounage.  He did a video about Black Men Hate Natural Hair (see the video below).  Now I will talk about my personal experience.  I started my personal natural hair journey in 2013 and initially it was going very well as there was still some relaxed hair with the new growth.

Eventually when I was almost fully natural I started to cut off the little bits of relaxed hair that was left.  Then my husband will tell me that he did not like my hair.  Basically every time he looked at my hair he would tell me this.  I too went through a bit of adjustment where I did not like my hair.  I even did a video about this. I think I just did not know how to style my hair also I know I had to go through a bit of mind adjustment.

There were times where I would protective style my hair with bantu knots and my husband did not like that.  I felt a but guilty as I was not making myself look attractive when I went to bed.  Lets face it ladies, we still have to look attractive to our man when we go to bed!! Maybe my husband thought I would have go back to relaxing my hair as he did not like my natural hair but I had already made up my mind to continue on this journey.

Now these days he would pass his hand through my hair, I think he is getting accustomed to my natural hair now.  We (both men and women) were brained washed into thinking that our natural hair is not beautiful so it takes time for us to readjust and 'open' our eyes and see that our natural is beautiful!!!

Its refreshing to listen to the opinion, from a man - to be precise - an African man, about women growing their hair natural AND men as well.

Gabrielle Union Exposing Her Natural Hair On Being Mary Jane

I was watching Being Mary Jane, starring Gabrielle Union, on Friday March 20.  I stepped away  from the television for a bit and in quickly passing by the TV, I saw this image of Gabrielle Union with her hair natural. I quickly grabbed my cell phone and took this photo.  The images on the TV went by so quickly I was not able to get more than one photo.

I was totally surprised and excited at the same time to see her with her hair natural.  The role she was playing at the time was that she had removed her weave and was desperate to get her hair redone.

My question, she has a lovely set of hair, why does she have to install a weave? How did she feel exposing her natural hair to the public?  I think it was a brave move on her part to do this and I would like to see more female celebrities showing their natural hair with pride.

My Review Of Cantu Shea Butter For Natural Hair

I absolutely love this product.  Previously I would apply gel to my natural hair before going to work and we all know the characteristics of gel is the hair will be crispy and hard.  Since I found this product, I apply it to my hair instead of the gel and my hair is so soft PLUS I love the curls my hair creates when this cream is in my hair.  Great product!

My Girl Has Joined The Natural Hair Team

Found this video the other day and just had to share, it is so funny. But on a serious note, personally it took me a while for my mind to adjust to my natural hair and it was not only me, my husband did not like but I think now he has gotten accustomed.  He even puts his hands in my hair sometimes.

Interview With An "Ex-Hair DreadLocker"

I recently learnt that a friend of mine cut off her dreadlocks . I wrote about her in one of my older posts. I knew her from when she started this dreadlocks journey which is about six years ago - 2014. Now I am seeing her at the end of the journey onto a new journey. Of course I am very interested in why she took this drastic step because I know this is not something that you will get up one day and decide to cut of our dreadlocks. It would have taken some time to make the decision. So I asked for an interview and here is how it went:

Question: What made made you decide to cut your dreadlocks?

Answer: I fought with the decision to cut the dreads for about 6 to 8 months. The feeling was up and down. I have been experiencing neck and back pain for over a year and after going to the chiropractor, massage therapist and physical therapist on different occasions, I had to make a decision. I have been spending alot of money at the doctor to get medications and to calm down and relax the muscles. So after much thought, I felt I had to cut the hair in order to get some relief.

I was told to cut off some but I think it would be a huge disrespect to the dreads to cut off some so I decided it is all or nothing! My head sure feels light and free. I miss the dreads ever so often but I am at peace with my decision.

I am now able to sleep comfortably and wake up with no pain. I can go to the beach and get all into the water without having to worry about the hair and the trouble of drying it after.

Question: What are your plans now that you have cut off your locks aka dreads?

Answer: I plan to keep it low for a while since I am swamped for time and this new style is soooo easy to maintain. Eventually I may decide to grow it some more but I will never put any chemicals into it. 

End Of Interview

This is the second person I spoke to about cutting their hair and apparently the locks can be very heavy (when it has grown to lengths like these) and can cause headache, back problems for some people. Who would have thought? Well I wish my friend alot of peaceful nights, and pain free days and of course no comb, no maintenance hair days! She looks absolutely fabulous with any hairstyle!

Wait I am done yet!!! In addition to a change in hairstyle, my friend (who I will call 'K') has decided to donate her locks/dreads to cancer patients. What a humble gesture! I am so proud of her! I want to take this opportunity to thank for the allow me the opportunity to interview her. Thank you 'K'!

I just thought that I should mention that this post is not to detour anyone from making the decision to 'lock' their hair. Everyone will have a different experience. So do give it a try if you are thinking about going on this journey!
